I have a job! A permanent one. As of 16th July I will be a HR Assistant dealing with UKBA compliance and fixed-term contracts for Durham University. Which is a little scary as I have never done anything like that before but the role is new, so no one has, which I think worked in my favour.

This is also a huge relief, I started work in November 2009 and while I have been lucky enough to have had a fairly steady stream of temporary contracts since then this will be first time since leaving university that I will not have the looming worry that I may not have a job in three months time. The instability of temping is wearing and tiring, especially as Dave is still studying for his Masters and we are saving for the wedding. So I shall not be sorry to see the back of temporary and fixed-term contracts (for me at least, I'll be seeing a lot of fixed-term contracts for other people in this job).

I am aware that in the current job climate there is no such thing as a permanent job and there are no guarantees of this one lasting a long time. But that's okay, the office has just finished a re-structure so I am probably safe for at least a year or so, maybe more. And I don't want to stay here forever, just until Dave has graduated and we know how likely his getting a job will be. I also have not given up hope of getting a job where a Masters in Medieval History will actually be useful. But they are few and far between (and mostly in London, where we can't afford to move yet). So for the moment I am incredibly happy and grateful that I have a job that will not be going anywhere and some stability from which to work out where I actually want to go next. It is much easier to plan your journey when the ground is not sliding away underneath you.
